What to expect on the day

To ensure that you connect with the right recruiters and obtain information relevant to you, you should attend the event specifically geared for your discipline.

On Thursday 6 March, Business, Commerce, Economics, Arts and Law students should attend between 10.00am and 1.00pm; Engineering, Computing/IT and Science students between 3.00pm and 6.00pm. The two events are not interchangeable and will open and close promptly at the stated times.

Dress casually and comfortably, but neatly, keeping in mind that you could be introducing yourself to your future employer. First impressions count!

Employers are typically more impressed with students who:

  • are well presented,
  • introduce themselves professionally (perhaps with brief details about their studies and career goals),
  • maintain eye contact,
  • ask perceptive questions that demonstrate their prior research and a real interest,
  • don't just visit their stands for the freebie gifts and lollies!

The quality of your approach not only signifies your personal interest and preparation, but influences an employer's overall view of Monash University students, their calibre and career readiness, so it's important to realise that how you present yourself at a Careers Fair can impact on other students and the University's reputation.

In past years, up to 2,500 students have attended each of these events. Given that we anticipate similar or greater numbers again this year, you may only have a short time to speak with each employer and in a noisy, busy environment, you will be competing with other students for access. Your preparation will be crucial in helping you quickly find your chosen employers and approach them confidently.

Finally, while these are important events with a serious purpose, they can also be upbeat and fun. Be sure to get plenty of rest the night before so you can be at your best on the day!
