Getting to know Australia
You may wonder what getting to know Australia has to do with jobs and careers.
Well, firstly, while you are here, it is inevitable that you will have to interact with Australians at various levels during the course of your everyday activities, but if you plan (or think you might need) to work while in Australia, you may at some stage have to approach, meet and interact with Australian employers in order to get jobs.
The more you speak English, learn about local life and embrace Australian cultural elements that integrate well with your own, the more relaxed and confident you will be when presenting yourself to a potential employer.

About Australian Slang
Like other countries and cultures, Australia has its own slang 'lingo' - words and phrases with double or implied meanings.
Slang is generally only used in casual discussion and communication, and most commonly amongst friends, family or people you know. You may hear fellow students at Uni (or colleagues in the workplace) using it - perhaps talking together at lunch - and knowing what some Australian slang expressions mean can save you embarrassment through misinterpretation, helping you feel comfortable to join in.
Do remember that the use of slang is not acceptable in formal interactions such as job interviews, where the other person doesn't know you and may form much of their impression of you based on what you say and the type of language you use.
Here is a list of common Australian slang words and phrases that you're likely to hear in everyday conversation, along with their parallel meanings. It is not intended for these terms be learnt or adopted, but simply to help you understand them in context. (link the underlined section in this para to a new pop-up page, to contain the list of slang expressions from below in this document)
Above all, don't be afraid to ask someone what a slang term means if you haven't heard it before.
