Work Integrated Learning (WIL)

Initiative

Project initiated by Office of the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Education) as a component to the ‘Act’ section of the Monash Passport Model.

What is WIL?

Basically, it is a relationship between Student and the University; the University and Host Organisation; Host Organisation and Student.

WIL is a broad term which comprises programs or activities such as: Internships; Community Based Learning; Short or Long Term Work Placements; Experiential Learning; Cooperative Education; Industry Based Learning; Clinical Rotations; Student Projects; Competitions.

Often, programs or activities are for academic credit (or at least have the potential), and increasingly that the Host is involved in assessing the work undertaken by students.

Project Aims

  • identify and characterise activities
  • share good practice
  • create a repository of resources
  • strengthen community engagement

Since 1961 when Engineering introduced a 6 day ‘hands-on’ workshop, many faculties at Monash have included Work Integrated Learning as a core element of their teaching program.

The project is therefore about refining, discussing what makes a quality WIL program and providing assistance via resources.
